We are celebrating Red Ribbon Week this week. The national observance is Oct 23-Oct 31, but at Carpenter we elected to celebrate it this whole week because we wanted to keep the focus away from "Halloween week." In schools, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities. http://redribbon.org/about/ This year at Carpenter we felt that the PAWS Theme continued to be a perfect fit with our school-wide PAWS program - a terrific tie-in with Civil Behavior. Listed below are the themes and activities for the week.
-
Monday--"PAWS for Sports NOT Drugs"--students wear their favorite sports/team jersey
-
Tuesday--"PAWS for Animals NOT Drugs"--students wear favorite animal shirt or animal print
-
Wednesday--"PAWS for Dreams not Drugs"--students wear pajamas
-
Thursday--"PAWS for Reading and Writing not Drugs"--students read in hallway 15 minutes before lunch
-
Friday--"PAWS for Spirit"--students wear red or spirit wear
Red Ribbon Week is a perfect springboard for parents to have conversations with their children at home about the dangers of drug use. It is not too early to provide our children with information that will help them make good decisions as they become older. Obviously, the conversations will be different with a Kindergartner than a 5th grader, but they are both as equally important. Talk to your children this week and provide them with helpful and truthful information that is age-appropriate. Through the efforts of the school, parents, and community, we can provide a safe and healthy future for our children.
