District 64 continues its important work in instructing students about Veterans Day as a way to deepen their understanding of our nation’s traditions. Here is an overview of some of the ways students and staff had an opportunity on Friday, November 10 to participate in the observance of this important national holiday honoring military veterans:
- District 64 Board of Education member Larry Ryles was among a record 40+ veterans who participated in activities at Roosevelt School today. The morning included all-school assemblies and classroom visits by veterans to share stories and answer questions; both breakfast and lunch were provided by the Roosevelt PTO. (See photo below)
- Emerson MIddle School launched an entirely new project this year to great acclaim! Emerson parents were asked to send in videos or pictures/information of their relatives. A video was produced with 50+ submissions representing a variety of active servicemen and women plus veterans and memorial submissions. The video was played during morning live announcements today throughout the school. The highly personal stories had a tremendous impact on students and staff alike!
- Carpenter School - The 3rd grade continues its tradition of performing Flag Songs as the whole grade level comes together to sing patriotic songs for the school, while they learn the history and meaning behind their development. Teachers also conducted individual activities and instructional learning based around Veterans Day.
- Franklin School - This morning, the entire school assembled outside around the flagpole at the front of the school to say the Pledge of Allegiance and sing God Bless America. The Park Ridge Police Honor Guard joined students; Franklin’s Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts wore their uniforms to school. All students were given a little flag to put in the ground around the flagpole. Returning indoors, students assembled by grade levels to hear a presentation from a veteran. This year, Franklin had veterans from the Marines and Navy. A continental breakfast was provided to the veterans to thank them for participating.
- Lincoln Middle School - This year, students in 6th grade Channels of Challenge/Language Arts created a display of memorabilia of their family’s veterans. Seventh grade students heard a presentation from Rob Sarra, a former Marine who served in Iraq, in their Social Studies classes on November 9. Other teachers are doing individual activities and instructional learning based around Veterans Day.
- Field School & Washington School - Teachers at both schools conducted individual activities and instructional learning around Veterans Day. Washington students today dressed in red, white and blue to symbolize our nation. Field is working with its PTO to plan a larger assembly for next year, too.
