Emerson was redesignated in 2025 by the Association for Illinois Middle Schools (AIMS) as a "Horizon School to Watch". Illinois' Horizon Schools to Watch demonstrate academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structures and processes designed to support a trajectory toward excellence. In addition to 2025, Emerson won the award in 2009, 2012, 2015, 2018, & 2021.
