Champion speller advances to regional competition

District 64 is pleased to announce that Lincoln grade 7 student Catherine Sernel came in 3rd place during the 6th Annual North Cook Intermediate Service Center (ISC) Scripps Spelling Bee competition on February 2 at The Joseph Sears School in Kenilworth.

Sernel will now advance to the Regional ISC Championship Competition on February 17 at McClure Junior High School in Western Springs. The Championship Bee will begin at 7:00 p.m.

"Catherine is the first District 64 student ever to move on to regional competition," noted District 64 Superintendent Laurie Heinz. "We wish her all the best as she prepares to compete at the championship level, which is a tremendous accomplishment," she added.

Sernel was District 64's first-ever "three-peat" winner, when she took first place at the District 64 Spelling Bee on January 25 for a third consecutive year. That exciting event went 42 rounds!  Read more here.

At the Championship Bee, Sernel will compete against the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners of bees from the South Cook ISC event, which will be held on February 4, and West 40 ISC event, which will be held on February 9.
