Washington Secured Entry
Board of Education and community members toured the new secured vestibule at Washington School in advance of the August 22, 2016 Board meeting there.
It is the first secured entry approved by the Board as part of the new Health Life Safety survey/Master Facilities Plan; it was completed over summer 2016.
Here are some of the features of the new secured entry:
- Visible changes on the exterior include two new windows at the 1500 Stewart Avenue entrance to provide direct oversight of the walkway.
- A "teller" window within the secured foyer allows visitors to provide their identification to school staff before admittance to the office, which is itself locked from other areas of the building.
- Impact resistant security film was applied to all entry doors providing another layer of security.
The office now occupies the corner of the building once used for a classroom. The former office area has been reconfigured as a 21st century learning space assigned to a 4th grade class as well as a smaller Channels of Challenge classroom.
The total project cost was $839,000 and includes other energy efficiency enhancements for the spaces.
