Parent University 2023-2024
Viewing Of Angst On 2/27/2024
We have another Parent U event scheduled on Tuesday, February 27th at 7:00 pm in the Hendee Rooms (8200 Greendale Avenue Niles, IL 60714), where we will be hosting a viewing of the short film Angst. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, educators, experts, and parents to raise awareness around anxiety. The recommended age is 5th-8th grade parents and students.
The goal of Angst is to help people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety and encourage them to reach out for help. Angst screens in schools, corporations, communities and theaters around the world. The film and corresponding materials provide tools, resources and above all, hope.
The North Cook Regional Office of Education/Intermediate Service Center partnered with Angst creator/producer/director Scilla Andreen to offer this for free to our community. You can view a trailer of the film here.
Superintendent Dr. Ben Collins gave a safety update to some members of the community on Thursday, January 24th 2024. It was the first Parent U of the new calendar year and it went over the state of safety in our schools, including facility issues, protocols, and future improvements. There was also presentation from Be SMART on the importance of gun safety. Information on Be SMART can be found at BeSMARTforkids.org.
The 2nd Parent University of the year was excellent! We had our copies ready, and pencils sharpened as parents got a first-hand look at what it's like to be a part of a math lesson in our schools.
Sitting in the same desks students sit in, dozens of parents learned about Eureka Squared and Carnegie Math and got to hear it all from our incredible teachers. Thank you to Tracie Heffelfinger, Laura Rousakis, Shelli Mata, Tracie Thomas, Katie Weis, Caitlin Cooney, Maeve Scibek, Lauren Gryzik, Jess Caplis, and Dr. Samantha Alaimo for hosting this event for our families!
We appreciate everyone who was able to make it and for your eagerness to learn more about our curriculum.
Dr. Justin Patchin, who is the Co-Founder and Co-Director of the Cyberbullying Research Center. Dr. Patchin travels the country and talks with students, educators, and parents about how to safely navigate social media and prevent the misuse of technology. Dr. Patchin provided a lot of info and advice regarding children using social media, technology, and cyberbullying. If you weren't able to be there in person, we recorded his presentation for parents to use as a resource. You can view that video here on our YouTube page.
