News from the March 20 Board of Education Meeting

The District 64 Board of Education held a regular meeting on Thursday, March 20.

Battle of the Books

It was also great to acknowledge our Washington and Franklin students who participated in the Battle of the Books. Washington finished in 2nd place, and Franklin in 3rd place. They shared with us that they read 40 books over the 5 weeks!

Those Who Excel

Over the next two board meetings, we will recognize our Those Who Excel Award winners. At this meeting, it was Roosevelt Student Services Coordinator Alyssa Zommick.  "I've worked with Alyssa for years, and to describe what she's about as a teacher, an educator, and an administrator for us, it's these simple words: service to others above self," said Roosevelt Principal Dr. Kevin Dwyer. "I am so honored to be working alongside her every day with those qualities in mind how she works with other people."

"Alyssa has been instrumental in helping us guide the way for our specialized programs," said Director of Student Services Alicia Schmeisser. "As we talk about rolling them out at the elementary and the middle school levels, we tap into her experiences when she was a special education teacher, especially when we talk about curricular resources and making sure that we're setting our teachers up for success."

Superintendent Update

As of the deadline of 3/10/2025, 3,489/4,405 (79.2%) of students were registered and took advantage of the $50 early bird discount.

This deadline was slightly earlier than last year when the deadline was 3/22/2024, and on that date, 3,898/4,426 (88.1%) of students were registered and took advantage of the $20 early bird discount.

Approve Adoption of Amplify CKLA Curriculum (Grades 3-5)

In April 2024, the ELA Curriculum was adopted, but more dialogue was needed at the grade 3-5 level.

The following adjustments were made to programming for grades 3-5:

  • General education and Channels of Challenge ELA classes will mirror one another for a full 105 minutes of integrated instruction.
  • Special education refined co-teaching and push-in models for grades 3-5.

His report presented population and housing trends and assessed the implications of these trends for future enrollments. It is important to note that forecasts are not guarantees. They are based on assumptions derived from historical data.
