Extended School Year (ESY) vs. WOW Basic Skills
Please use this page to learn more about the differences between Extended School Year (ESY) and D64 WOW Basic Skills Classes. Additionally here is a informational flyer.
Student Eligibility for ESY (Extended School Year)
- Students become eligible for ESY services through an IEP team decision; these services are then written into a student’s Educational Services and Placement in the IEP for the upcoming summer. Parents will receive notification of their student’s ESY eligibility through an IEP meeting or an IEP amendment and the IEP will document these services.
- Students who are eligible for ESY are demonstrating significant regression and recoupment of skills on their IEP goals following an extended break from instruction. Students can also become eligible for ESY services due to being significantly (ex. multiple grade levels) below grade level.
- District 64 uses a rubric to guide ESY eligibility determinations.
- Students can be eligible for support in Reading, Math or Independent Functioning. Related Services (ex. Social Work, Speech, Occupational or Physical Therapy, etc.) can also be recommended.
- The purpose of ESY is to maintain IEP goal progress. ESY focuses on helping students maintain the skills they've already learned, rather than teaching entirely new concepts.
- All ESY eligible students’ parents will receive an email from the District about registering for ESY after Spring Break. Parents will complete the registration form through the link provided and receive updates about teacher, classroom location, etc. from the Student Services Department.
- All ESY students are eligible to receive Special Education Transportation to and from school.
- All ESY classes will be held at Roosevelt School from June 2-July 2 (no school June 19th or Fridays).
- ESY services are funded by the IDEA grant.
Invitation to D64 WOW Basic Skills (Reading and/or Math) Classes
- Students are invited to participate in the D64 WOW Basic Skills (Reading and/or Math) classes if they are not eligible for ESY but have reading and/or math goals on their IEP.
- Students with IEPs who participate in WOW reading and/or math classes will not work on IEP goals.
- WOW Basic Skills classes in Reading/Math are divided by grade level bands.
- Space is limited for WOW Basic Skills classes and are on a first come-first serve basis. WOW Basic Skills classes are provided at no cost.
- All WOW classes will be held at Roosevelt School from June 2-July 2 (no school June 19th or Fridays).
- For the 24/25 school year, D64 Basic Skills classes are funded by the Title 1 grant.
