Reducing waste with locker and desk clean outs

As we prepare for the upcoming year, we wanted to highlight some great work already done. Schools across the district organized a Green Locker/Desk clean out. To reduce waste, students were encouraged to reuse school supplies for next year. When that was not possible, students were asked to sort their supplies into 3 categories: donation, recycle, and landfill.

Julie Berman, as part of the D64 PTO Green Team, used the remaining supplies to create 20 backpacks filled with items for students in Cicero District 99. Another twenty-one boxes were donated to Brennemann Elementary, a Chicago Public School expecting 100 migrant families this fall. All other items were brought to SCARCE, an organization that works to build sustainable communities.

Emerson Middle School students, under the guidance of Ms. Tenner, are pictured below sorting and cleaning names off gently used supplies. Donated materials were repurposed for both staff and students at their respective schools.

Together We Discover, Learn, Grow & Care

At D64, our mission is to foster opportunities for discovery, engagement, and growth for all students. We accomplish this by nurturing interdependence, appreciation of differences, and care for self and others.
